This is an engine coolant thermostat with seal for Subaru boxer engines from 1990 to 2021 and the Saab 9-2X. The thermostat controls coolant flow so the engine warms up quickly and stays at the right temperature. A failing thermostat usually shows up as overheating, a temperature gauge that stays low or swings, weak cabin heat or a check engine light.
